July Arabic Language Goals

Here are my July language goals:

1. Finish the Michel Thomas advanced Arabic course, I’m currently on disk 3, only one more to go!
2. Finish disk one of Michel Thomas vocabulary builder
3. 10 hours of Arabic immersion with films or TV, last month was 6. I think an increase can only better my skills!
4. 6 hours of Arabic language exchange, last month’s performance was poor. This month I intend to do better!
5. Minimum Michel Thomas work: 10 hours. Again I’ve increased this.

Total hours studying Arabic: 26, lets do this!!!!!

End of June review

Here’s a review of how June went:

I started off well but ran into a few difficulties getting my Arabic language exchange hours. My wife would go to the gym and I’d be left with our baby then she’d start crying and need feeding, burping and cuddles. So my talk time is not at my target, next month I will get this back up! I also started a new job so my whole routine has been messed up on my last week. So, please shout at me to get my arse into gear!

1. I got a lot of Michel Thomas work done, all of disk 2 memorized and almost finished disk 3.

3. I watched a lot of Arabic TV including a really great film, Captain Abu Raed.

4. I did a lot of practice using Anki Droid, I would do this whilst my wife would be watching a crap TV program.

5. I learnt how to say most of the phrases.

Here are my hours completed:

1. Michel Thomas: 10 hours
2. Arabic TV: 5 hours
3. Talk time : 30 mins – oh the shame!!!!!!!!!!!

Total hours: 15.5

Here are the goals I originally set for June:

* Minimum talk time hours on skype: 6 hours
* Minimum Arabic TV time: 6 hours
* Minimum Michel Thomas: 6 hours
* Complete Disk 2 and Disk 3 of Michel Thomas Arabic Advanced Method

Total: 18 hours

Be able to ask the following by the end of June:

* Where do you live?
* What do you do for a living?
* I work in IT
* How old are you?
* Do you have any hobbies?
* I do BJJ
* Ask about a persons health to do with the doctor etc
* I miss you
* send my love to everyone
* I have a wife and daughter

Next month I’ll get my talk time up!

AnkiDroid

I love this little app! You can create a deck of cards you wish to memorize and the app intelligently ranks your cards. It also syncs online! So you can practice your words and phrases on the bus or on the computer. It really does help with your learning!

Immersion – Does it work? I hope so!

I’ve heard about Language immersion and I have been trying it for a few weeks. It consists of watching Al-Jazeera Arabic and a Turkish Syrian Arabic dubbed series called Fatma. I can make out words and some parts of conversation but I’m not sure if it’s helping, we’ll find out in a few months 🙂 AJAAT highly recommends it to immerse yourself in the language and he seems to know what he’s talking about. If anyone has any suggestions please contact me!
